History & description
St Hilda's in Tottington opened in 1964 after the site was purchased in 1963. The mission dated from 1916, when worship took place in the chapel at Holly Mount convent. Housing growth in the 1950s helped create the need for a separate church.
Timber construction
Arthur Farebrother & Partners used the Lanner system, with laminated timber trusses forming the main structure. These rise visibly from floor level inside the church. A steep roof, buff brickwork and broad areas of glazing give the building its distinctive shape.
Later changes
The church was built during the Second Vatican Council, but originally had a conventional high altar and rails, later altered or removed. A presbytery by T. Keith McCann Associates was added in 1969. The survey distinguishes the congregation's early history from the date of its present building.
