History & description
St Mary the Virgin, Bury, combines a Victorian church by J. S. Crowther with an older steeple completed in 1842. The present church took five years to build and was consecrated on 2 February 1876. A narthex, or entrance space, joins the taller Victorian nave to the earlier tower.
Inside the church
The Minton mosaic floor, carved heads and regimental colours reward a close look. The building served as the garrison church of the Lancashire Fusiliers. Old Testament figures appear in the north-side windows and New Testament figures on the south. The south chapel entrance screen is by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.
Planning a visit
The parish lists ramp access, wheelchair spaces, an accessible toilet and a hearing loop. Guided tours can be arranged in advance. Personal photography is welcomed; commercial photography requires permission. Check the official visitor page for current arrangements before travelling.
