History & description
St James the Great at Daisy Hill was built in 1879-1881 to designs by Paley and Austin. It is listed at Grade II*. Brick and terracotta, rather than an entirely stone exterior, give this church its distinctive appearance.
Local benefactors
The parish history credits sisters Alice Makant and Margaret Haddock with funding the church. Their connection with the Westhoughton Corn Mill links the building to the working and family history of the village.
The east window
The church's own history guide highlights an east window designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made by Morris & Co. It provides a filmed explanation of the design, including details difficult to see from the floor. Together, the architecture, glass and story of the donors give visitors several ways to understand this late-Victorian church.
