History & description

St Peter's in Halliwell was built and consecrated in 1840. It is distinct from St Peter's, Bolton Parish Church, in the town centre. The parish describes the Halliwell building as Grade II listed and provides an illustrated guide to its interior and exterior.

Adapting the building
Extensions in the 1980s provided a kitchen, lounge and toilets. The parish also records the removal of pews, allowing the interior to support different arrangements and activities. These changes form a later layer in the history of the nineteenth-century church.

Churchyard and family history
The parish burial guide records the first burial on 26 November 1840 and explains how the churchyard expanded in stages. Its online burial search and ground plans offer a useful starting point for family-history research. Consult the parish for current arrangements before a visit.
