History & description
St Patrick's in central Bolton opened on 17 March 1861 to a design by Charles Holt. It stands on a corner site at Great Moor Street and Johnson Street. The church served a growing Catholic community, including Irish families who had come to work in Bolton's textile industry.
A changing skyline
The tower and short spire mark the street corner. The upper section was rebuilt in 1946 after the original taller spire became structurally unsafe. The church is built of stone with a slate roof, using pointed windows and other Gothic Revival details.
Parish history
A purpose-built school followed in Dawes Street in 1884, replacing earlier accommodation in a warehouse. Taking Stock records a new high altar and east window during the ministry of John Burke in 1907-1911. Its account also traces later parish mergers, distinguishing the history of the congregation from the date of the surviving building.
