History & description

St Michael's in Whitefield opened for worship in 2000, replacing a timber church-hall built in 1969. The congregation developed as the Hillock Estate grew during the 1960s. Early Masses were held first in a workmen's hut and later in the infants' school.

A combined church and hall
The present building was designed by Greenhalgh & Williams to provide worship and parish facilities beneath one roof. Its broad, shallow-pitched roof covers a rectangular plan, with red brick and blockwork outside and modern rectangular windows.

Inside
The sanctuary sits along one of the longer walls, with seating arranged to face it. Some fittings were brought from the previous church. This is a modern parish building whose date is much later than the community it serves. The parish was reunited with St Bernadette's in 2009.
