History & description
St Mary the Virgin at Deane is a Grade II* listed parish church whose fabric records several building periods. Historic England describes it as mainly late Perpendicular, incorporating earlier work. The upper row of nave windows, known as the clerestory, was added in 1833; restoration followed around 1880.
Architecture and features
The stone church has a west tower, two aisles and a chancel continuous with the nave. Differences between the north and south arcades reveal how the building developed. Carved animal heads survive on capitals in the north-west part of the church.
Interior details
Historic England records a Jacobean pulpit, a timber altar depicting the martyrdom of George Marsh in 1555, and an east window by William Warrington dating from 1845. These details make the church valuable for understanding both local religious history and the changing decoration of an older parish church.
